Galentine’s Day is a holiday created by Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler’s character) of “Parks and Recreation” that takes place on February 13th. The day is dedicated to the celebration and appreciation of gal pals everywhere, and it is absolutely genius. We put so much pressure on our romantic relationships, but rarely do we put time and effort into celebrating female friends – the moms, sisters, BFF’s and coworkers who listen to us mope about our jobs and b*tch about our boyfriends’ socks that are forever strewn about the floor; the women who repeatedly confirm that no, our butts do not look fat in those jeans (unless they do, in which case the jeans are immediately vetoed). Thanks, ladies!
This year Galentine’s Day falls on a Saturday, the perfect day to invite over your gal pals for cocktails and general merriment. Menagé à Trois vodka asked me to create a cocktail recipe for the occasion and of course I said, “Yes!” This cocktail is more on the sour side than sweet, has a lively jalapeno kick, and is perfumed with basil throughout. Though this recipe yields one cocktail, it would also work great as a batch drink – just muddle it in a pitcher, and stir with ice instead of shaking.
Galentine’s Day Basil Crush
(Yield: 1 cocktail)
- 3 basil leaves, torn PLUS 1 basil leaf, to garnish
- 2 thin slices of jalapeno pepper
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 ounce lemon juice
- 2 ounces Menagé à Trois vodka
- 2 ounces sparking water
In a cocktail shaker, combine basil, jalapeno, sugar and lemon juice. Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, crush ingredients until broken down. Add vodka with a handful of ice and shake until outside of the shaker is very cold and frosty, about 30 seconds. Strain into a tumbler filled with ice and top with sparkling water. Place the remaining basil leaf into the palm of your hand and clap your palms together (this helps release the essential oils); garnish cocktail with basil and serve.
For gals who prefer their cocktails on the fruitier side, there’s the Boozy Strawberry Slushie: To make 1 cocktail, blend 1 cup thawed frozen strawberries with 2 ounces Menagé à Trois Berry Vodka until smooth. This drink will go really well with all that chocolate you’ll surely be eating.
And don’t forget the snacks! Here are a few of my recipes to try:
- Goat Cheese and Caramelized Onion Crostini
- Cashew Ricotta Toasts with Seared Mushrooms
- Pão de Queijo (Brazilian Cheese Puffs)
- Kale-Apple Salad with Parmesan Chips and Tahini Dressing
- Muhammara Toasts with Goat Cheese and Cucumber
Happy Galentine’s Day!
