Hellooo, blogosphere! As you may have heard, I moved apartments last week, which explains why this is my first new post in two weeks. I am very excited to be up and running again, and equally excited to be sharing this cocktail recipe with you.
My relationship with gin started out rocky. I first tried it in a Negroni (at an age when it was still illegal for me to try a Negroni…) and found it absolutely vile. How anyone could enjoy something so intensely sweet, bitter and herbal in the same glass was beyond me, and I recoiled just from just the thought of it Then I met Rene, who loves gin. The first year he took me to Cape Cod, we arrived at the campsite after nightfall. The first thing he did was pour us celebratory gin and tonics in plastic cups, and we took them down to the beach. I don’t know if it was the salty beach air, the dark woods, or just the excitement of being on vacation, but the drink went down superbly well.
Since then, g+t is my summer cocktail of choice. And when I’m feeling extra fancy, I like to muddle in some cilantro and add slices of cucumber to enhance the drink’s summery zing. The way I see it, there’s no better way to bid adieu to summer 2015 than with this cocktail in my hand. Cheers.
For those who despise the flavor of cilantro, sub it out with fresh dill or basil for a similar effect.
- A few cilantro leaves
- 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
- A few thin slices of partially peeled Persian or Kirby cucumber
- 1 part gin (I recommend Hendrick’s or Bombay Sapphire)
- 2 parts tonic
- For each cocktail, muddle cilantro with fresh lime juice at the bottom of a serving glass until fragrant. Add cucumber, ice, gin and tonic. Stir and enjoy.
What’s your go-to summer drink?
