With this post I’m taking a break from regularly-scheduled recipe programming to tell you about the most wonderful getaway spot in upstate New York – Foxfire Mountain House. Rene and I had the pleasure of staying there on the latest installment of #AlexandReneontheroad, when we drove from NYC up the Hudson River and over to the Finger Lakes. The timing of our trip coincided perfectly with the release party of my friend Rebecca Ffrench‘s newest cookbook, Whole Protein Vegetarian (more on this later!), which was hosted at Foxfire.
Rebecca is a cookbook author, recipe developer, event planner and cake baker; she is also founder of The Upstate Table, a series of gatherings at Foxfire that celebrates food, community and local producers. The party was one of those cool hipster events where people sip local wines and ciders on a bucolic property, while snacking on seasonal crudites, and lounging on vintage quilts laid in the grass.
The morning after the party, Rene and I had a few hours to enjoy Foxfire before moving on to our next destination, and I just could not help myself from taking pictures of everything. Foxfire Mountain House is the pièce de résistance of husband and wife team Eliza Clark and Tim Trojian. Eliza has a background in interior design and Foxfire definitely reflects that – every nook and cranny of the rustic 10-room hotel manifests boho sophistication. The house is strewn with ogle-worthy antique furniture and accessories. From the artwork in the foyer, to the mirrors in the powder rooms, to the drinking glasses on the bedside tables, everything was obviously hand-selected, yet appears to be effortless. If you don’t want to take my word for it, check out their features on Apartment Therapy and Remodelista.
The first floor consists of a bar and dining room, a large living room with a stone fireplace in the center, and a dreamy wrap-around porch that has been laid in Moroccan tile by Tim himself. Upstairs are 10 airy bedrooms for guests. The hotel is a popular wedding destination, but on weekends when no one’s getting married, Foxfire is the perfect place to escape to with your significant other. Check it out this fall!
