Add spicy mayo (or another creamy dip – ideas below!) and you’ve got a satisfying, restaurant-fancy side dish.
Sweet Potatoes Nutrition
Sweet potatoes are a staple of my grocery list. They’re cheap, long-lasting, versatile, and super good for you. Apart from being high in fiber and potassium, sweet potatoes are rich in antioxidants (as are most strongly-pigmented vegetables). And despite being sweet, they’re actually considered low GI foods, so they’re a great way to satisfy sweet cravings.
Key Ingredients + Substitutions
- Sweet Potatoes: Choose smaller potatoes if possible, to avoid having comically long wedges.
- Oil: Use a neutral-flavored high smoke point oil, like avocado oil. Melted refined coconut oil is another great option.
- Spices: This version has a smoky Tex-Mex vibe, using a blend of smoked paprika, cumin, garlic, and chili powder. Feel free to swap in whatever you like though – be it Old Bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning, or even yellow curry powder.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
Find complete instructions with ingredient amounts in the recipe card below.
Step 1: Cut the Potatoes
To cut a sweet potato into wedges, start by trimming off the ends. Then, using a sharp knife (here’s my favorite), halve the potato lengthwise, then cut each half into 4-6 wedges, depending on the potato’s size.
Step 2: Season the Potatoes
Put the wedges in a large bowl, and add the spices and oil. Toss with your hands to coat them evenly.
Step 3: Air Fry the Wedges
Preheat your air fryer to 400ºF. When it’s ready, arrange half of the wedges in the basket in a single layer (you’ll be cooking these in two batches). Air fry the potatoes until they’re golden brown and you can pierce them easily with a knife, about 15 minutes, flipping them once with tongs about halfway through.
Step 4: Serve the Sweet Potato Wedges
Transfer to a serving platter and serve with your favorite dipping sauce. My go-to homemade “special sauce” is made of mayo, ketchup, hot sauce, garlic powder, and fresh cilantro. These air fryer sweet potato wedges are also delicious with cilantro cashew cream and my dairy-free tzatziki.
FAQ’s + Expert Tips
15 to 20 minutes. The thinner they are, the faster they’ll cook. Keep in mind sweet potatoes contain sugar and every potato has a different level of sugar. So, these can go from golden brown to burnt quickly. Keep your nose engaged and check on the wedges during cooking to prevent burning.
Whether you’re roasting or air frying, sweet potatoes should be cooked in a single layer so that hot air can circulate around each piece. If the pieces are stacked on top of one another, they will steam and end up mushy instead. Be patient and don’t crowd the basket.
While these air fryer sweet potato wedges do have crisp edges immediately after coming out of the basket, they soften as they cool. If you want more of that crackly texture, try coating the potatoes in cornstarch/arrowroot before cooking; it will absorb some of their moisture. (Check out Laura’s tutorial for crispy baked fries.)
